Yak wool, also known as yak down, is less well-known than cashmere wool, but possesses a similar luxuriously soft texture and surpasses both cashmere and sheep wool in warmth and durability. Yak down lacks the irritating, “scratchy” properties of regular wool, allowing for all-day skin contact without discomfort. For these reasons, it is a preferred primary warm layer in Mongolia’s sub-zero climate, used in particular for winter wear such as socks, thermal undergarments, hats, and scarves, and is moreover prized by the fashion industry for its softly sleek appearance and ability to hold integrity of weave over prolonged use. Mongolian camels belong to the two-humped Bactrian species, distinct from the single-humped dromedaries of North Africa and Arabia. Adapted over millions of years to extreme chill, Bactrian camels bear a fine, abundant wool with superior insulation qualities, due in part to its hollow, crimped fibers. Prized in Europe during the Silk-Road era – and later by the British Empire for use in garments for officers stationed in the Himalayas, camel wool is not only exquisitely warm but has water-resistant, moisture-wicking properties provide the wearer with a sensation of fresh, dry comfort.
